Widow of the American president and founder of the renowned treatment center for substance abuse, Betty Ford provided a beacon of hope for millions across the world. How ironic, then, that she should also be the namesake to this lively Raval bar, whose modus operandi is the debilitating combination of liquors.

The irony is not lost on Betty Ford’s trendy, cosmopolitan clientele (Vice crew, indie rockers), and was doubtless intended by its wry Australian proprietor, whose nationality fuels the bar’s unofficial moniker of “El Australiano.” An extensive and frankly deadly cocktail list—the daiquiris are superb—might even have the erstwhile first lady of the free world recanting her views, especially during the dangerously late nine-to-eleven happy hour.

In truth, the bar’s tasteful interior (arm chairs, projection screen) and light-hearted service foster a playful ambiance that’s far too easy to commit to.Quote_transparent
